R.U.G. – Deathly Fighter 7″

What can be even more awesome than a band that names itself after a band member (who’s not even the singer)? The Randy Uchida Group can, without a doubt! Centered around GISM’s guitarist (and wearing the most outlandish clothing you could imagine!), their only official release was this incredible 7″ from 1984. The two songs „Deathly Fighter“ and „Crazy Bomber“ are both very eighties heavy metal complete with soprano wailing, loads of tapping and long solos with melancholic guitar harmonies. It’s obvious that Randy Uchida liked to show just what crazy shit he could pull of, so his playing here is even more over the top than with GISM. There’s also a 12″ bootleg of this 7″ with some live tracks added, but apparently the source for the boot were some low kbps mp3s, so the the quality is said to be really bad.

Leather, fishnets, studs and mascara!

Finally a decent rip of this single! Many thanks for that!
Years ago I found a rip that had a mistake with the volume at the start of „Deathly Fighter“. And the rips in youtube are the same ones… So, finally! :)

The RUG singer is quite appalling in my opinion but I‘m very much into Uchida’s playing so I try to ignore the singer, ha. Yes, Uchida has improved his playing in this single compared to Detestation but he does very much the same he does in later GISM tracks like „Still Alive“ and such. I‘m intrigued with the guitarist though. When I see GISM live videos from this era it amazes me how carelessly Uchida plays. Out of tune, missing notes, and so on. Not very Randy Rhoads, really :D (Uchida is said to have taken the ‚Randy‘ from his idol Rhoads.) His way of playing is unthinkable for a ‚real‘ metal axeman. Uchida was a total punk. Well, metalpunk. Unique. And that’s why GISM was the original crossover band, one or two years before thrash metal came and the HC bands started crossing over all over the world.

Thanks! This 7″ is definitely superb and essential listening for GISM and heavy metal fans and today is Uchida’s day of passing. I also happened to find info on a 7″ release of a different band named Guilt that is supposed to sound similar to Randy Uchida Group. Would you happen to know anything of this release?:

    Hey Fernando,
you‘re right, Uchida’s playing is pretty dirty, even on the studio recordings he’s often a little off the beat. But I can‘t help it, I really love this mix of almost cheesy dual harmonies and total brutality.

    Hey Ed,
this 7″ is news to me, never heard of it before. How did you come across Guilt?
    Take care

    To 抗独,
I haven‘t listen to or come across a rip/copy of the Guilt 7″ yet, I just found out about it because it is listed in the „Similar Artists“ tab of the metal-archives page for Randy Uchida Group.
