ME♀SS – Get Into A Mess 7“

This flexi 7“ was Me♀ss‘ debut release from 1986. They played very tight and fast hardcore, sometimes being very metallic (as in the chug-a-chugging instrumental intro), sometimes being pretty punky. Me♀ss went on to release two albums, one 8“ and a number of compilation tracks. Though I‘m not completely sure, Me♀ss‘ band name was probably derived from the japanese „mesu“, meaning female and being pronounced roughly similar to the english „mess“. It would also explain the venus sign in the name. Although the name is occasionally transscribed as „Mess“, it probably does not mean „mess“.

What a mess!

v.a. Best Run Fast Vol. 2 7“

And yet another one by MCR Company! One track each by Sicilian Blood, MESS, Idora and DONDON. To me, Sicilian Blood are the winners on this comp: driving, powerful and almost catchy; MESS are not yet as weird as they would become, and deliver some vicious riffs; Idora’s song is a metallic dirge which turns wild in the end, and DONDON are the blunt instrument on this comp.

Run, you fuckers!

v.a. Get Back The Discharged Arrow LP

Another japanese compilation with the awe-inspiring Crück on it! They are definitely among my favorites when it comes to late eighties thrash bands from Japan: super fast, primitive and catchy with a cool singer! Hell, yeah! Me♀ss are more metallic; one of their songs (Wreck Of Maggot) even sounds so rocking, it could almost have been written by bands like Mustang or Clown. Mad Conflux definitely have the most vicious production on this LP. Their compressed sound makes their thrashing sound even more urgent and ominous. Last are Acid whose songs are the most punky (and who sound almost tame compared to the rest…).

What arrow?
